As I kept looking into low-poly games, I decided to look closely at the PlayStation 1 era of graphics. There are a few sprinkles of Nintendo 64 titles which are also well worth a look at (Perfect Dark comes to mind, possibly some Hybrid Heaven too).
One way which seems extremely approachable is to create something with a sci-fi, cyberpunk asthetic.
As I am trying to develop and release a completed game project, I realized I have to start thinking and organizing myself more efficiently.
For example, my best modeling projects have come from what you can call “standard“ modelling. Buildings, rooms, etc.
Science Fiction lends it self well for such an exercise.
I have started to research 2 titles from the PlayStation 1 library which have exactly what I’m looking for:
Front Mission 3 and Racing Lagoon.
FRONT MISSION 3
Front Mission 3 was easily accessible, as it was released here in North America. Racing Lagoon however, was a major pain in the ass, as it was never released outside of Japan.
RACING LAGOON
Good thing for sites like Romahacking dot net. Some beautiful individual took it upon himself to translate the entire game.
As this style of geometry is accessible to me, one major piece of the puzzle which still remains to be tackled is the texturing. Especially this pixel-style of texturing.
Hopefully, I can have one test model up soon. Once I lock down this style, I can hit the ground running.
